Thirteen Ghosts works OK enough as a fx-filled haunted house story. It's darker and more painful than I expected. I can't wait for Monk to get canceled so Tony Shalhoub can go back to being to stealing scenes in good movies and being the best thing about mediocre ones. It does boast an uncommonly effective and powerful opening credits sequence. Using only offscreen sound effects and dialogue and a 360-degree visual montage, it establishes back story, character arcs, and the general tone of the film in about three-minutes. Those moments and the initial introductory scene buys quite a bit of capital for the rest of the picture.
